Cambridge City 0, Redditch United 2

Rampant Reds edged closer to the play-offs with this convincing victory.

There may have been just two goals separating the sides at the end but the scoreline fails to show just how dominant with the visitors were as they controlled the proceedings throughout.

The opening goal came on 15 minutes when skipper Ashley Sammons powered a shot past Zac Barrett in the Lilywhites goal.

But the Reds should have opened the scoring earlier than that with both Courtney Baker-Richardson and Sammons denied by the home keeper inside the first ten minutes.

The visitors continued to press and Barrett was relieved to see a Baker-Richardson shot fly past the outside of his post.

But the pressure was too much for Cambridge and they fell further behind on 31 minutes when Calvin Dinsley slotted home after some slick passing between Baker-Richardson and the excellent Sammons.

With a minute of the first half remaining, Dinsley went close to grabbing his second of the game but his header skimmed the top of the crossbar.

And the Reds went close again within seconds of the restart, this time George Carline glancing a header wide after he was picked out by Simeon Maye’s cross.

With Clayton McDonald outstanding at the back for the visitors, Cambridge struggled to create anything to threaten keeper Sam Hornby, a Danny Kelly shot on 48 minutes their only effort of note.

In contrast, City keeper Barrett needed to put in a Star Man display to keep Redditch at bay.

After Sammons had put a good effort wide of the target, Barrett pulled off an excellent save to deny Carline who was looking to finish off a fine flowing move.

The win takes the Reds to within five points of the play-offs with a trip to mid-table Bideford to come on Saturday.
