BATCHLEY teenager basketball player Lewis Leigh has set his sights on playing at the highest level after being picked for England under-14s.

The 14-year-old impressed coaches at a recent training camp at Nottingham Wildcats and will attend future sessions and be involved in friendly games as part of the sport’s development programme.

Lewis, who is 6ft tall and plays as a point guard, has been in great form while playing for Redditch Basketball Club in the regional leagues.

He’s also played with distinction for the West Midlands and Longbridge-based Team Birmingham in the National League.

Father Peter Leigh said: “The England set up do not have an under-14s team but it’s part of developing youngsters for the under-16s.

“For a point guard, who is one of the more creative players, Lewis always get a good number of blocks and scores a lot of points.

“He’s one of four guys to be selected in the 25, and of those the only one outside of Birmingham, so he’s doing well.

"The most important thing is his education and he’d love to attend Barkley Abbey Gram-mar School in sixth form, which is the country’s only dedicated school academy.”

The teenager, who trains up to 12 hours a week, is also set to start his GCSEs next year at RSA Academy Arrow Vale.
