Worcestershire club captain Brett D'Oliveira lauded his side's strong performance following an impressive showing in the side's Vitality County Championship curtain opener.

Not letting the rain intervene in an energetic performance, the County demonstrated their prowess in a draw against Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Monday (April 8).

Headlined by a Jake Libby century on the final day, Worcestershire were in control with a 260-run lead at 327-2 in their second innings before the rain drew proceedings to a close, preventing them from setting a target for the Bears.

The team still amassed a total of 14 points in their return to Division One, and looked on track to a tick in the win column had it not been for the elements.

Captain D'Oliveira said: "I think we performed well over these four days.

"That’s the game of cricket, the ebbs and flows of it."

The captain acknowledged past seasons' ups and downs but remains optimistic.

He said: "When we have come up, we’ve always been the favourites to go down.

"But it’s potentially something we can use to our strength – and hopefully surprise a few teams."

One of the key influencers in the match was batsman Kashif Ali, with D'Oliveira commenting: "I think Kash has had a really special game, and I think he is a special cricketer."

He also emphasised the valuable contributions of other players, such as Libby and Gareth Roderick.

On Worcestershire new five pronged seam attack playing style, D’Oliveira said: “The make-up of the attack is something we looked at in the winter and Ashley (Giles) and Alan (Richardson) have recruited really well, especially with the overseas players.

“It just gives us a really nice balance to our team to be able to play those five seamers and also lengthens our batting order as well.

“It looks nice on paper but we’ve got to go out there and perform, and hopefully we can do that at Trent Bridge on Friday", when the Pears will meet Nottinghamshire.
